USO Sasebo Spotlight: GSM1 Rhoan Sahagun

GSM1 Rhoan Sahagun, a dedicated Gas Turbine System Technician in the U.S. Navy, has been proudly serving his country for over 20 years. In the fall of 2022, Rhoan and his family relocated to Sasebo, Japan, where they quickly found a familiar sense of comfort and belonging through the USO. Having experienced the support of the USO throughout multiple PCS moves and duty stations, Rhoan was inspired to give back to the organization that had always been there for him and his family.

Driven by a deep sense of service and gratitude, Rhoan became a vital part of the USO Sasebo volunteer team. Alongside his wife and two children, he regularly enjoys the USO’s amenities and programs, which continue to serve as a “home away from home” while stationed overseas. This personal connection fuels his passion for contributing and ensuring that other service members and their families can experience the same comfort and community.

Civic-minded and community-oriented, GSM1 Sahagun devoted his off-duty hours, six days a week, to supporting USO operations. Since 2022, he volunteered for over 1,400 hours, a remarkable achievement that played a key role in keeping both USO Sasebo centers operational and welcoming for military families.

His unwavering commitment has not gone unnoticed. Rhoan was named Volunteer of the Month and Quarter in 2023, received the USO Gold Mission Award for exemplifying all eight USO core values, and earned the prestigious Volunteer of the Year title. He was also honored with the USO Salute to Service Award and the Gold Presidential Volunteer Service Award, a testament to his exceptional leadership, dedication, and impact. GSM1 Rhoan Sahagun continues to embody the true spirit of volunteerism and remains a cornerstone of the USO Sasebo community. His tireless efforts and compassionate service truly make him a force behind the forces.

What is your favorite memory of/at the USO?

“It was when USO Sasebo awarded me the Gold Mission Award and the staff prepared an elaborate and intimate breakfast event for me and my family. I felt their gratitude, love, and appreciation not just for me but for my whole family. It was very heartwarming.”

Why do you volunteer for the USO?

“What inspires me to volunteer is seeing the everyday challenges that military members and their families face especially stationed overseas. I have witnessed how a simple act of support, a helping hand or even a small event can make a big impact in someone’s day.”

What is your favorite program?

“USO Sasebo’s On Board Series (formerly called BOB: Bingo On Board) which is an event exclusively for servicemembers and brought on board ships and commands and Paint Party which is open for the whole family.”
