As my ship was approaching the land of Japan, I was fortunate enough to be standing watch on the bridge. Open view of the new world was right in front of me, and it was somewhat terrifying. No more Norfolk, or driving on the highway with my van. I couldn't wait to jump off the ship and explore the new world. Strangers on the train spoke a language I wasn't familiar with; but that changed when I entered the USO. At that moment is when I decided to be part of this organization. USO is not just a place to grab free snacks, but a place to relax and feel at home. I volunteer to keep the USO open for my fellow sailors and their families.

I volunteer so much, because it makes me feel human. Numerous times have I closed the USO because I always think in my mind, those sailors who have nowhere else to go, stay at the USO because they don’t want to be on the ship, or their racks. It gives them some sense of solace away from work. I love it because I feel like my time genuinely means something. Ensuring snacks and drinks are stocked. Taking out the trash, keeping the center clean, etc. Devoting my time to helping sailors and their families where they can hang out and rest and get away from the ship. And even if it means closing at the very last minute so those sailors can get a few more minutes rest, I’ll do it. Because I care about those around me, even at my expense. I’ve come to appreciate everything I do at the USO and that they do for me, and those around me. As we help each other, there is no higher calling.
