The USO Sasebo Center at Fleet Landing has reopened with a fresh, inviting glow, one that instantly wraps visitors in warmth the moment they step through the doors. What was once a cozy haven for servicemembers and their families has blossomed into an even brighter refuge, thoughtfully redesigned to bring the Sasebo community comfort, connection, and a little piece of home.

For volunteer Jean Jarin, pictured above(right) enjoying the new dining booth with her friend Minerva Espino (left), the refresh became an emotional and personal mission. “The USO has always been such a welcoming space,” she shared, her voice soft with affection. “Being part of the refresh felt like a meaningful way to help keep that sense of comfort and community alive for others.” She lights up when she talks about the new dining area, now airy, modern, and irresistibly welcoming. “People just naturally gather there,” she said. “Whether it’s a meal, a cup of coffee, or just some laughter, it brings people together in the best way.”

Jean’s commitment to the USO is rooted in a memory she has carried since childhood. In 2004, after being evacuated from Bahrain, she landed in Virginia to find USO volunteers greeting military families with stuffed bears for the kids. “I remember how comforting that felt,” she recalled. “That small act of kindness stayed with me. It’s one of the reasons I’m here today. I want to help give someone else that same feeling.” Jean is not alone in feeling the impact of the refresh. A patron stopped by during a quiet afternoon, shared a simple but heartfelt reaction: “It just feels brighter in here, like someone cared enough to make this a place we want to come back to.”

That sense of care resonates throughout Fleet Landing, a building that has welcomed servicemembers and families for nearly a century. Fleet Landing, true to its name, was originally built in 1924 by the Imperial Japanese Navy. Later, the U.S. Armed Forces embraced it after World War II. It is a building that carries its own unique history of arrivals, transitions, and new beginnings. The refreshed USO center starts a new chapter that continues the legacy of Fleet Landing with renewed purpose.
